The law is read out like a warning, and a stable hand finds himself in the Queensguard. A jeering voice says stable work awaits him by nightfall. The queen asks his name, hears the name Kale and learns that the castle passed him over, and calls that perfect. From tonight he guards her bedchamber. Alone with him, she explains her choice: he looks back. The law forbids him to touch her, she notes, and is silent on her touching him.

Episode 2: a crown, a barred door, a dare

The door is barred and the dare grows. The queen sets her crown in the guard's hands and warns that dropping it is treason. She makes him say the law aloud. He objects that he has no business in her room, and she agrees, calling that the thrill. Then comes the clock: tomorrow the court chooses her husband, and tonight she is not his queen.
